Lib Dem motion on G20 policing leads to major review of Met policing

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 30th Apr 2009

Dee Doocey, the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Police Spokesperson and Member of the MPA, commenting on the outcome of today's meeting of the MPA which looked at the police tactics for the G20 demonstrations said:

"I am delighted that all my concerns about the policing of the G20 demonstrations have been taken on board and will now be addressed by the MPA. Kettling, baton charges and attacks using dogs can never be justified against peaceful protesters.

"The Met still don't seem to fully understand that some of their tactics were counter productive, as well as an immense breach of civil liberties for the vast majority of people who were peacefully demonstrating on the 1st April.

"Today, the MPA have joined me in urging the Met to closely examine its policies and practices to ensure that good policing and the protection of the liberties of peaceful demonstrators are both fully upheld."
