Mayor's "spend now, pay later" transport policies will cost London dear - Pope

11.59.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 16th Oct 2007

Geoff Pope, Lib Dem London Assembly spokesman on transport, today hit at the Mayor's "Spend now, pay later" transport policies, claiming that these will cost London dear.

Pointing out that more than £11billion of the £16billion bill for Crossrail will be paid, one way or another by Londoners, Geoff Pope highlighted that London Underground's incompetence in managing the PPP maintenance contracts could land Transport for London with a bill of over £1billion, leaving precious little for other important transport projects.

Geoff Pope said:

"Londoners can expect a savage hike in fares from 2009 to cover a vast black hole in TfL's finances - after next year's mayoral election of course."

"Now the Mayor and TfL are in sole charge of managing the Crossrail project, extraordinary care will be needed to avoid cost overruns. The Olympics' fiances haven't given Londoners much confidence so far."
