METRONET JOB CUTS MUST NEVER COMPROMISE TUBE SAFETY

7.30.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 26th Aug 2005

Commenting on the documents leaked to Channel 4 news that show the number of redundancies tube maintenance company, Metronet, will be making is 630 rather than the 300 previously announced earlier this week, and that it will involve shedding jobs in the safety division, Liberal Democrat London Assembly Transport Spokesman, Geoff pops, said:-

"The job cuts at Metronet must in no way affect the safety of Tube passengers.

"We will be seeking urgent reassurances that there will be no impact on any aspect of safety on the Tube.

"Metronet must make it crystal clear that none of the job losses are compulsory, and that redundancy pay-offs are generous.

"London needs a more efficient operation from Metronet. Hopefully these changes will lead to faster upgrades of stations and an end to delays and cancellations on the Tube.

"It may be that real ruthlessness will be necessary to streamline the organisation but it must not impact on the safety of the network."
