Power failure 'a wake-up call for London'

12.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 29th Aug 2003

Commenting on London's power failure last night, Sally Hamwee, Lib Dem Chair of the London Assembly said: "Last night's incident will have been a wake-up call for London."

"Power was restored quickly, but there was still a big impact on the travelling public. Investigations should look not only at the causes of last night's loss of power, but also the ability to move large numbers of people during an emergency, when we are without power. .

"That might need to happen for any number of reasons, but Londoners need to be assured that procedures are in place so that London can cope should there be a similar or more serious incident in the future."
