Lib Dems are the only choice for London Mayor

12.00.00am GMT Fri 8th Nov 2002

Londoners were left with only one real choice for London Mayor this week – the Liberal Democrat candidate, said Graham Tope, leader of the London Assembly Liberal Democrats, responding to the selection of Nicky Gavron, the current deputy mayor, as Labour's candidate for London Mayor.

Graham Tope said: "Ms Gavron has asked her supporters to vote for Ken Livingstone as their second choice, while Ken Livingstone is urging his supporters to vote for Ms Gavron as their second preference."

"She will not be seriously contesting the mayoralty in her own right, but merely be smoothing the path to enable Ken Livingstone to have a second bite of the Mayoral cherry.

"What other choice is there for Londoners? If people want an alternative to Ken Livingstone, they are not going to vote for Ms Gavron. The Conservative party is in a mess. The Liberal Democrats are the answer."
